Dale Hollow Lake has some great smallmouth fishing. It is the home of the world record smallmouth bass. Book Your Trip Now. Fishing this section of Cumberland River is an unusual experience in comparison to most Kentucky smallmouth streams.
After clearing Summer Shoals, the river widens to nearly two football fields. The usual water reading and lure placement goes out the window when fishing a river this wide.
The shoals run bank to bank as well. The Cumberland never looses its charm even though it changes faces often. The photo at upper right was taken near Ashland City, Tennessee and shows that the lower section of the Cumberland is as beautiful as the upper reaches.
The River will eventually widen once more going down river as it becomes Lake Barkley. Fly fishing hatches in order of importance: Midges, several mayfly species, caddis, stoneflies, terrestrials.

Fly fishing for trout on the Cumberland river hasn't been on fire, but it's been close. Over the past 2 weeks our seasonal temperatures have changed, more leaves are transitioning to fall color, generation schedules have been mixed, and trout in the river have noticed all of this.
Dreves believes that the Cumberland River receives less fishing pressure than other high-quality trout waters in the region. "This area does have good mayfly hatches, too, which provide recurring sources of food that trout prefer," said Dreves. "Some anglers will use those hatches to their advantage in picking good times to fish.".
The river has rebounded from the fish kill and angler success is very good. The Gasper River runs from the backwaters of the Barren River all the way to the Warren County line.
This provides around 21 miles of good stream with much of it floatable. Some parts of the river will require anglers to float a ways, portage, and then float again.
In my defense the river hasn’t really fished since sometime last November, we sold and bought a house, and I literally just fished the Cumberland for the first time in two days ago.
